Part of the MHF team had the opportunity to head down to El Paso on Saturday, March 22nd for the annual Expo Familia Health Fair, where we proudly supported our partners at National Grange, USA Boxing, and USAging in hosting a vibrant, community-driven vaccination clinic.
What began as a traditional health fair quickly blossomed into a high-energy celebration of wellness and culture, as more than 10,000 people from across the Borderland turned out to take part in the event. This record-breaking attendance far exceeded expectations and reflected the city’s deep commitment to health, connection, and prevention.
There was a steady stream of families arriving together—mothers, fathers, grandparents, and children in tow—turning the event into a truly multigenerational experience.
With a goal of 500 vaccinations, organizers were astonished when the pharmacists ran out of vaccines including those for flu, COVID, HPV, and MMR. Besides vaccines, health offerings were wide-ranging: from blood pressure and glucose checks to breast cancer screenings and chronic illness education.
One question came up repeatedly during the event: “Where can I get my kids vaccinated?” Health educators provided guidance, handed out brochures, and emphasized protecting the whole family. To meet this need, the MHF team helped create a flyer specifically for the El Paso audience, detailing how to access free or low-cost vaccines for children at local health departments.
A standout feature of this year’s event was the Grange’s partnership with USA Boxing, which introduced a powerful layer of inspiration and energy. Headlining that effort was Olympic hopeful and professional boxer Nayeli Rodriguez, a proud El Paso native, boxing champion, and trusted messenger for health and wellness. Throughout the day, Nayeli engaged with families, signed autographs, and emphasized the importance of vaccines, discipline, and strength—both physical and emotional.
"Nayeli is the kind of role model our girls need. Someone who’s real, strong, and rooted in this community," said one parent.
The boxing exhibition, featuring young local athletes, gave children a chance to participate and connect through movement and sport. Many lined up for a chance to glove up and step into the ring, guided by coaches and mentors.
What made this event so successful? It was powered by trusted, local voices. Familiar faces from the local Hispanic media, dedicated community workers, and local pharmacists all played a role. Their presence reminded us how essential trusted messengers are when sharing health information - especially in diverse, multilingual communities.
“We love our community and we love supporting this event,” said Diana Delara Zamudio, General Manager of the Entravision Stations in El Paso. “When people recognize someone they trust—on TV, on the radio, in the ring—it helps deliver the message that your health matters and there are people here to help”
All told, Expo Familia 2025 was a powerful success. With its family-centered design, trusted voices, vibrant culture, and health-forward message, the event left no doubt: when wellness is made accessible, joyful, and rooted in community, people show up - and lives change.
